Jordan Moreau of Variety felt the special was "stuffed with funny, feel-good Christmas joy, and it's one of the best pieces of content Marvel Studios has released in years." Moreau praised James Gunn's delivery of his "signature, laugh-out-loud, zany" style in the special with a short runtime, how it "pays homage to the nostalgic tropes of Christmas specials", the depiction of Drax and Mantis, and its soundtracks and songs.[59] Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter felt that the special was "funny enough to provoke out-loud laughter and poignant enough to elicit that telltale sting behind the eyes, if not quite enough to draw full-on tears. Maybe it lacks the heft of a true Guardians feature or series, but it's exactly the holiday confection you'd want from this motley crew: shiny, fluffy and just odd enough to feel personal" and lauded the "delightfully eclectic" soundtrack. Han also felt that the special became the first Marvel Cinematic Universe entry to have a Christmas-themed story instead of setting it in December to coincide with the holiday, such as Iron Man 3 (2013) and Hawkeye (2021). However, Han noted the special being "as slick a bit of marketing as they come... to remind audiences how much we love these characters, who haven't headlined a big-screen adventure in five years [since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)]", and how it had a script "sprinkled with crumbs of awkward exposition" and was "underwritten by the kind of studio clout and money that can get a Kevin Bacon to show up and hang out with aliens for a few days."[60]

Parents need to know that The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is a special featuring the Marvel superhero team on a holiday quest. Its content is in line with the other GOTG movies; violence includes characters being beaten, usage of both Earth and space guns, a police car getting overturned, and a kidnapping. Language includes "s--t," "crap," "damn," and "sucks." There's also lots of drinking; characters get drunk on shots and appear hung over. Despite (and because of) the edgy exterior, this is a great holiday special for families with teens to try out. It has fun music, lots of action, and more holiday spirit than viewers might expect.
Fans of retro holiday specials and superheroes alike will find lots to enjoy in this goofy, chaotic holiday treat with a lot of unexpected heart. In The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Drax and Mantis take center stage, so if you like their usual banter, there's lots more of that here. Kevin Bacon is also delightfully game, playing an easygoing version of himself. While it's not an official musical, like the other GOTG movies, music plays a big role, and offbeat holiday hits like The Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" and new original songs by The Old 97s are a fun listen. And despite the rough-around-the-edges vibe, it still might bring a tear to viewers' eyes when the Guardians turn Knowhere into a holiday paradise for Peter.
JAMES GUNN: I just wanted an excuse to work with my buddy Kevin again. Really, I just like working with him. But I thought it was hilarious. I brought the idea of making a holiday special up to Kevin Feige, and he was into it, so I started playing around with it. I don't really remember how I got the [idea of] Kevin Bacon being the present that Mantis and Drax were going to give to Peter Quill, but it happened very early on in the writing process. I wrote it quickly, and then I was just praying that Kevin was going to do it because I knew he would be the perfect person to play Kevin Bacon.
It was great because the shooting schedules were totally intermingled. Vol. 3 has a lot of the fun and the goofy stuff of Guardians, but it's also incredibly emotional. It's the end of the story for this group of Guardians, so there was a lot of emotion around it. It was very serious a lot of the time. The actors were all pushing themselves a lot, especially Chris Pratt. It was heavy. So to be able to take a day off and go shoot this goofy, low-stakes comedy show where nothing was really too serious, that was really a relief, and it was a lot of fun. I really would look forward to those holiday special days on my schedule. It's like, "Oh, it's a holiday special day today. Let's party."
It was really hard. This Christmas special was the easiest thing of all time. The movie was the hardest thing I've ever done. I'm starting to feel pretty good because I'm starting to see it come together. I'm starting to see how people react to it, and I'm seeing what works. Most of the work now is on VFX and dealing with the score with John Murphy, who did such a spectacular job with the holiday special. But I've started to feel pretty comfortable with it because I just want to honor these characters and honor the fans that have supported us this whole way. 041b061a72
