Ford vs. Chevy. It's one of the oldest rivalries in the automotive world. In the 21st century, the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickups battle for the annual vehicle sales crown. A couple of years ago, the Silverado dropped to third place (behind Ram), but if you include sales of the other large General Motors (GM) pickup, the GMC Sierra, the GM trucks are right there with the best-selling Ford.
Which large light-duty pickup should you buy? This 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vs. 2022 Ford F-150 comparison will help you answer that question. Each pickup comes in numerous configurations ranging from a no-frills work truck to a luxurious family hauler. But only Chevy offers a diesel engine option on its large light-duty pickup. Chevrolet offers the 2022 Silverado 1500 in WT (Work Truck), Custom, LT, Custom Trail Boss, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country, and ZR2 trim levels. Of the many engines Ford offers on the 2022 F-150, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and 5.0-liter V8 offer the most bang for the buck. The F-150's PowerBoost Hybrid V6 might make sense if you prioritize lifetime fuel economy and/or plan to buy Ford's Pro Power Onboard option to use your truck as a mobile generator. You can equip most Ford F-150s with 2WD or 4WD, but the off-road-focused Tremor and Raptor are exclusively 4WD, as is the F-150 Lightning.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates diesel Silverados the highest for fuel economy. With all-season tires, you can expect 23-26 mpg in combined city and highway driving (21 mpg with all-terrain tires). Four-cylinder Chevy Silverados rate 18-20 mpg combined, while the V8 trucks return 14-18 mpg, depending on the drive configuration and tires. Expect lower fuel economy on trucks with the trailering package, which specifies a more aggressive (numerically higher) rear axle ratio.
