the first edition of the book was published in 1862 and was intended to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of firoz shah's reign. it consists of two volumes and is dedicated to the reigning sultan, firoz shah tughlaq. in this regard it was a unique historical compendium of the period and deserves to be considered as an important document of the literary heritage of india. written by zia ud din barani and completed in 1357 ce during the reign of sultan firoz shah tughlaq, the book was dedicated to the reigning monarch. barani, as mentioned, was the son of a distinguished scholar, who held the post of chief royal scribe and was also an expert in the persian language. after being appointed as the chief royal scribe of firoz shah tughlaq, he worked on tarikh-i firoz shahi for over 20 years. his sources included family histories, accounts by other historians, religious texts and persian literary works. because of this, barani had detailed information regarding the socio-economic conditions of the time and was able to give a realistic portrait of society. this particular work can be regarded as a rich source of information about the military, religious, legal and political aspects of the sultanate period in india. it is very informative and well written and reveals many facets of the society of the time. although the book is in persian, it is highly accessible, as barani composed it in the mughal language and kept the persian style of writing. the translation of the book into english by sir muir was done between 1871 and 1875. the first volume consists of four parts and the second volume consists of three. the volumes were published separately during that period. the translation was completed in 1873.
